Here's a look at a design project I'm working on. This is a driver circuit for a push-pull amplifier designed around the 6KV8 tube. The 6KV8 tube is a high-gain triode with good linearity and high transconductance coupled with a frame-grid pentode also having a high transconductance. The slides are pretty heavy on engineering design terms, but give a good feel for what it takes to construct and tune an audio amplifier using vacuum tube technology. If you are down with Bode plots and circuit diagrams, though, it could serve as a nice introduction to building a class AB amplifier circuit. A drive tube should be able to swing the full bias voltage X 2 without distorting. For example, the EL3N has -8 VDC of bias and thus 500mv P-P input drives to full power. Since a CD player or phono pre-amp will put out 750mv at 0 db (max signal), no extra amplification is necessary. Thus, a passive line stage could work for the EL3N.
